There is scripture in the Bible that, although very short and sweet, has a huge impact if you really meditate on the words.
“Be still and know that I am God” Psalm 46:10
The photo above depicts a beautiful piece of hand-made art by one of my closest friends. It hangs in my dining room pretty much as a focal point. Besides it’s beauty and original beachy artwork, it stops me in my tracks at times.
Those times aren’t coincidental. Those times are when God is trying to get my attention to STOP and BE STILL and focus on Him!
We can deal with a lot in our busy lives and I think we tend to forget the Master of all creation even if we don’t mean to. I know I certainly don’t want Him to be an afterthought.
But to be honest with my readers, here, I’ll tell you I’ve spent a lot of time sitting alone at my dining room table either stressed, worried or even crying over something that a daughter of a heavenly King shouldn’t cry over. Why? Because He has greater plans and he does not want to see us travel down a path that causes pain or disappointment.
It’s easy for us to get caught up in our day to day problems and feel like “we” can’t fix them.
But, of course we can’t. Sometimes, it feels like we are in control and we can be the masters of our destiny’s.
Let’s just say for the sake of an example, if something isn’t meant to be in our life, if God hasn’t blessed it then it will feel like there are a lot roadblocks in your path. I’m not saying everything we want in life doesn’t have rocky times but I think we know when God is trying to get our attention and our focus back on Him so we can see who the ultimate tour guide is in our life and let Him lead.
That is called trust and faith.
On the days that I have been distraught over something sitting at my dining room table, I can honestly say that I catch myself looking up to see those words on that piece of art that hangs on my wall and it instantly brings me peace. It’s definitely a reminder from my heavenly Father.
Let’s break the verse down for a moment:
Be Still – find some quiet time between you and God. Just sit and meditate on the blessings in your life that you know are from Him. Shift your focus from your turmoil to Him for strength.
And know – believe without a shadow of a doubt.
That I am God – God is all sovereign. He is our strength and our refuge. He will never leave us or forsake us even when everyone else walks away. God is always there as comfort.
It’s also equally important to make this quiet time with God a regular habit. If you start your day off with the Lord first and foremost, you’ll find that you have the ability to face the world no matter what is going on in your life.
For a tiny verse it has great impact to reach our hearts. Take some time today to just sit with God, know that He is God, and truly believe that whatever it is going on in your life, He sees it all and He reigns over everything. We are never alone. He is with us everyday and if we let Him, he will lead us down the right path.
A path that is smooth and straight.
Do you find that you enjoy quiet time with God and how has it impacted your life? I’d love for you to share your thoughts in the comments below.
I completely agree with you Chelise. This is well written and from personal experience very true. Whenever I start my day off and spend time talking to my higher power(God) it gets me in the right frame of mind to go through the day and when I do face adversity things seem to come easier. My problem can be getting so caught up with the busyness of life that I sometimes forget about making this time in the mornings. It’s like anything, the more I do something it just becomes a habit.
When God is center, everything else will fall into place. When we lose sight of that, that is when life seems on shaky ground. Thank you for commenting.
One of my favorite verses when I am struggling! It is so hard to be still sometimes! I enjoyed your post! I really like how you broke it down word for word.
Holly, it’s totally hard sometimes. I’ve found it to be because we are human and want instant gratification and it’s hard to wait on God’s timing but in hindsight His timing is always better than ours.
I’m so glad you enjoyed the post. I knew others needed it as much as I needed to write it.
Thanks for taking the time to comment.
So true! I’m *pretty* good about dedicating still, quiet time each morning (summer is always a hit or miss…), but he is working in me to be still in the waiting. It’s the epitome of trust! I am a fixer by nature but am learning to rest in his MUCH more capable hands. Beautiful post & conversation! Thanks for sharing.
Hi Rachel, thank you for sharing your thoughts. I am like you where I try to “fix” also and it’s not always easy to be patient…it certainly helps us grow for sure. 😊
I think this phrase is so powerful in so many ways. Such a beautiful post and piece of art!
Thank you and I totally agree! I appreciate your feedback 💗
I like how you broke this verse down . I find that I CANNOT thrive when I’m not regularly spending time with God. If I let myself get so busy that I miss our set times enough, I start to feel like there’s a storm on the inside and complete lose my peace! I desperately need my Jesus time, it’s my lifeline.
I think breaking down a verse little by little can grasp at our heart strings sometimes even more than just reading it in one felt swoop. It really draws out the meaning. It even touched my soul when I broke it out like that. I’m glad you liked it.
I really needed to hear this today as worry and stress have crept back in these past couple of weeks.
Well that makes my day. I hope it lifted your spirits. Thank you for commenting!
Love this verse. I’m better at quiet times during the school year when the kids are off at school!
Great little verse….I agree! 🙂
God always there for us!
Yes He is!
Lovely artwork with an inspiring and peaceful message.
Thank you! I’ll pass along the sentiments to the artist! 🙂
Although I am not a religious person, I enjoyed reading your post!
Well that certainly means a lot to me. I appreciate that 🙂
Sometimes we all need a little reminder that God is there to guide us through. Beautiful piece of art!
Thank you! I’m pretty biased about the art piece too 😉
And yes I agree about reminders. Thank you for stopping by to read 🙂
This is definitely a powerful verse. There is so much depth in it. I think that sometimes we get so consumed with the stuff that we are doing in life that we sometimes forget this.
I agree! So much in such a little verse 🙂
That is a beautiful piece of art. I feel that “be still” is some of the best advice there is for a happy life.
Hi Laura, thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to read this post. Isn’t it funny how “be still” seems simple but can be a hard thing for some of us to do in our busy lives. I’m glad you found this encouraging.
Your friend is very talented! Great art and great verse!
Thank you for your kind words 🙂
It’s one of my favorite Bible verses, yet so hard to do. I want to jump in and ‘fix’ things, when what I should be doing is being still and letting God take care of the situation in His time. Wonderful reminder!
Thank you for your thoughts on my post. I’m glad it spoke to you!
Be still. Such a simple idea but sometimes so difficult to do. We can easily get wrapped up in the roles we create for ourselves without settling and listening.
“Those times aren’t coincidental.” I love this line. I feel like in life if something stops you in your tracks, you are right it’s not coincidental and is calling to our attention for a reason.
I totally agree, Erin. He has a way of getting our attention for sure.
This was very nicely written. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you!
Great reminder! This is one of my absolute favorite verses ~ though very difficult to cling to at times, of course.
Yes! I agree it can be hard at times. I think it’s human for us to want to fix things on our own.
Beautiful piece of artwork!
Awww thank you! I will pass along your sentiments to the artist!
What a great word picture. It is so true, but hard to do. Thank You for sharing this, I needed to hear it today.
I’m so glad you found this helpful! Sometimes He speaks to us in the small ways…thank you for visiting my site and sharing your thoughts on this post.
This is a very inspiring message.
it’s so funny I’m reading this today; we are “atheists” (long story) in my household, and my six year old asked about god today. I told her that when she is still and she listens to her inner voice, the all loving instinctive voice inside of her that will never lead her wrong, that that is god. Coincidence? I think not.
Wow! This was touching. I’m glad this still spoke to you. Love this! 💗
So beautifully written. I agree, we like to believe we are in control and to a degree I think we need to believe we are.
Thank you for your kind words Monica.
Thank you for the reminder! I often forget that I need to take the time to be still and just listen. With so many kids in the house finding some quiet time is hard. I know that early in the morning before anyone else is awake and when my mind is fresh is the best time. I really need to go to bed earlier and wake up earlier for me to have the best time alone with God. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately and your words are verification, I need to stop thinking and just do it. Thank you!
It’s always nice to be used but God and speak through words that you need to hear. I totally agree with you on all you said. It’s hard to sit and be still, have patience and wait on Him. I know you aren’t alone in that at all. I still get that way. We have to make a constant effort and sometimes life gets in the way. God bless!
You are SUCH a talented and creative writer, my angel. I am SO thankful you stuck with blogging because you have a distinctive style—practical advice, well-written, and informational. This image will always be a reminder of the depth of your compassion and selflessness on that day. [[[[[hugs]]]]]
Chris, if it wasn’t for you pushing me to start blogging I’m not sure I would have ever gotten into it but I do find it enjoyable and in some ways therapeutic (depending on the topic). Thank you for this beautiful piece of art that is displayed ever so proudly on a prominent wall in my home. I’ve gotten more than a few compliments and it all goes to the artist. Thank you for your kind words, as always.
