Who knew Virginia had the best kept secret in a quaint little city called Cape Charles. Just on the other side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge there’s rest, relaxation and rejuvenation from the busy rush of a work week.
And Gary and I found it surfing the internet for a weekend getaway. But pictures on a computer screen couldn’t do it justice.
We decided to take a long weekend, in June of last year, to Cape Charles, stay in a bed and breakfast, with no agenda and no care in the world.
We found the cutest two story Colonial bed and breakfast in the heart of Cape Charles. It was called The Cape Charles House. Built in the early 1900’s, this home was exquisite. A beautiful wrap around porch, the prettiest pastel yellow siding with big white pillars, and a sprawling garden that contributed to our meals, for sure.
Gary and I were amazed as soon as we pulled up to this gorgeous home. Our room that we stayed in, called the BF Kellogg Room, was immaculately kept and had an inviting, cozy feel.
Gary had never stayed in a B&B so this was quite a treat for him.
The owners only added to the charm. They were very welcoming and warm and we instantly felt our stay was off to a great start.
It was mid afternoon when we arrived and we were presented with refreshments and the offer to enjoy the front porch on white rockers. This we gladly accepted.
For dinner that night, we ate at a waterfront restaurant called The Oyster Farm. For our first “taste” of Cape Charles, this certainly was a hit. The view from our table was amazing and the food was top notch.
We spent a lot of time that weekend enjoying the surroundings, the beach and the quaint little shops in town. It was probably the closest vacation away from home in proximity I’ve ever been on, yet we felt like we were miles away from any stress that any given week can put on us.
While there we were told about a popular ice cream shop on Mason Avenue called Brown Dog Ice Cream. If you’re in the mood for trying some pretty interesting flavors and have an adoration for chocolate labs (for which this shop is named after) then this is a cool place to visit. We even ran into one of the couples that were also staying at The Cape Charles House and they snapped this picture of us. I would say we looked pretty happy. The ice cream was delicious!
Saturday night, we ate at an Irish restaurant called Kelly’s Gingernut Pub. This place was once a bank and we were actually able to be seated in the vault part of the restaurant. It was a pretty neat experience. Before we left, this ginger had to get a picture with the sign, of course.
In this sleepy little town, our stay felt cut way too short and we hated to say goodbye. The night before we left, we ventured one last time down to the beach and were lucky enough to get there just in time to see the sunset. I can’t explain how magical it was and the pictures below only give it half credit it deserves but all I can say is it was a perfect ending to our vacation.
It probably took us all of an hour or maybe less to get back home the next day. Cape Charles will forever be one of our favorite spots to visit in Virginia.
Being natives of Virginia Beach, how did we never guess there was such a place to cast your troubles aside even for three days. And who knew that just over a bridge was a place that you could feel home away from home just on the other side of a beautiful sunset.
Michael and I were just looking for a quick getaway next week. Maybe we’ll check this place out!
Definitely! And the B and B is so awesome trust me. Let me know if you guys decide to go. You’ll love it.
